Subject: | Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Health and Safety Act |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that provides for regulations and licensure of medical imaging professionals. A substantially similar bill was introduced by Rep. Bryan Cutler last session. The “Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Health and Safety Act” will protect patients by ensuring that the medical professionals operating medical imaging and radiation therapy equipment are appropriately trained and certified on the equipment. The new radiography equipment is specialized and is allowing advances in the field that used to be only theoretical in nature. However, with the advances and the increased imaging ability come the increased risks associated with increased exposure to ionizing radiation. There have been some examples in the country that have resulted in over-exposure to patients which have led to avoidable health complications and even death. The legislation creates a board of examiners, comprised of professionals in a variety of medical imaging fields, to establish scope of practice, set requirements for licensure, and to develop standards to improve medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures. The legislation also outlines the requirements for medical imaging licenses, including fluoroscopy, diagnostic sonography, radiation therapy, and radiologist assistant. The legislation will help assure patients that they are receiving the highest quality of care administered by medical imaging professionals. |
