Subject: | Voting System Exemption Legislation |
Shortly, I plan on introducing legislation that will exempt electronic voting systems that already have auditable paper trails from the Governor’s mandatory voting system update. In many counties across Pennsylvania, systems are already in use that allow the voter to verify his or her ballot before it is cast and hold a paper record of the votes that were cast. But the PA Department of State is decertifying these existing systems regardless of the fact that they comply with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s call for auditable voting systems. Instead, the PA Department of State is forcing counties with these already acceptable systems to replace them on an aggressive time line and to expend substantial taxpayer dollars doing so. My legislation will exempt our existing systems that comply with the Department of Homeland Security’s call for verifiable ballot voting systems while giving our counties a reasonable four-year timeframe to properly update their voting systems. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
