Sikhs have been living in the United States for more than 100 years. During the early 20th century, thousands of Sikh Americans worked on farms, in lumber mills and mines, and on the Oregon, Pacific, & Eastern Railroad, contributing to the foundation of early American infrastructure. Since then, Sikhs have contributed to this country in numerous other ways across many industries, pursuing careers that enrich the economy while adding to cultural diversity. In an effort to celebrate the diversity, hard-work, and positive community impact Sikh Americans bring to Pennsylvania, my proposal designates April 2019 as “Sikh Heritage Month.” April 15th, 2019, will mark a sacred day on the Sikh calendar as the 550th birth year of their founder, Guru Nanak, is celebrated. Please join me in supporting this resolution that honors the diversity of Pennsylvania and marks an important occasion for our Sikh American citizens. |
