Subject: | Defining a New Future for Pennsylvania Education |
The current education system is failing our students. It was modeled after an 18th century factory model to create docile subjects and factory workers. Times have changed. Technology has changed. The type of work has changed. It's time for us to create a new system that works in the 21st century for the students and the future of Pennsylvania. If you had the opportunity to design a completely new school system, what would it look like? Would it look different than the model established over 120 years ago? It should. This piece of legislation creates a commission to develop recommendations on how to move our education system into the future, so that we can better prepare our students for the jobs of today and tomorrow. The commission would be made up of: Governor (or designee) Attorney General (or designee) Auditor General (or designee) PASSHE Chancellor (or designee) Executive Director of PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency (or designee) President of PA Commission for Community Colleges (or designee) President Pro Tempore of the Senate (or designee) Minority Leader of the Senate (or designee) Speaker of the House (or designee) Minority Leader of the House (or designee) Two students of a public school appointed by the Governor Representative from a non-profit organization that represents a private elementary or secondary school in PA appointed by the Speaker of the House A representative from the following organizations: PA School Board Association PA State Education Association PA Coalition of Public Charter Schools PA Principals Association PA Association of School Administrators PA Chamber of Business and Industry PA Association of Career and Technical Administrators PA Building and Trades and Construction Council The commission will have a period of two years to develop recommendations on what a modern day 21st century school system should look like. At the end of the two year period, the commission will provide that report to the General Assembly. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
