| Subject: | Recognizing May 19, 2019, as “22q at the Zoo Worldwide Awareness Day” |
| 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is the second most commonly known chromosomal abnormality, however, it remains extremely under diagnosed. While not all symptoms associated with this condition are life-threatening, there is no cure and early detection may be crucial to an individual’s long-term prognosis. Unfortunately, unfamiliarity and a lack of understanding about the syndrome make this difficult. It is for this reason that I will be introducing legislation recognizing May 19, 2019, as “22q at the Zoo Worldwide Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Founded in Philadelphia in 2011, 22q at the Zoo Worldwide Awareness Day is an annual event where volunteers, families, and friends gather at local zoos and parks around the world in an effort to raise the public profile of this poorly recognized disorder. By handing out fact sheets, playing games, and showing solidarity to those affected by chromosome 22q11.2 disorders, participants help to engage the community with a worldwide phenomenon dedicated to helping those who need it most. Please join me in raising awareness of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, and supporting individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth who are participating in efforts to bring attention to this extremely misunderstood and under-researched condition.
