Subject: | Autism Acceptance Month - April 2019 |
On Thursday, April 25th, I will introduce a resolution designating April 2019 as “Autism Acceptance Month" in Pennsylvania. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex, lifelong developmental disability resulting in impairment of an individual’s ability to learn, develop healthy interactive behaviors and understand verbal, nonverbal and reciprocal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 59 American children are living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. ASD is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups but it is about 4 times more common among boys than girls. Currently, there is no cure for this disorder. This resolution intends to highlight the greater need for recognition, understanding and acceptance to ensure that all individuals living with ASD are accurately diagnosed and appropriately supported throughout their lives. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to promote awareness and acceptance for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. |
