Subject: | Recognizing and Encouraging Participation in Blood Drives |
After the Fourth of July, the American Red Cross issued a plea for help after a devastating loss in blood donations. In June, approximately 24,000 fewer donations were received. This left the Red Cross’ goal of reserving a five-day supply of blood for emergency needs unattainable. With current 2019 blood donations at such a low, the Red Cross can offer only a three-day supply of blood. During the school year, blood drives tend to be hosted by bustling high schools and college campuses. Without these reliable donations, combined with vacationing potential donors, the summer months always prove to be challenging for blood drives. The resulting decline in both blood drives and donations impacts the health and well-being of millions of Americans. Every two seconds someone needs blood. This doesn’t change because it is summer. Blood transfusions one of the most common medical procedures in hospitals. An ample supply of blood is crucial to save lives of family members, friends, children, neighbors – everyone. With the increased support of Pennsylvania blood donors, as well as blood drive hosts, the call for help can be heard and the time to act is now. To show my continuing care and concern for those in need, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the emergency call issued by the American Red Cross, as well as encouraging blood drives in both in our home state and throughout the nation. Please join me in offering support for patients in need not only in Pennsylvania but across the United States. |
