Subject: | Notification to Property Owners of Changes to Official FEMA Flood Maps |
Those of us with river communities know the problems associated with flooding in our neighborhoods, along with the cost of flood insurance. When the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) adjusts its flood maps, residents are often faced with an unexpected rise in flood insurance premiums. In order to assist residents who are affected by flood map changes, I will be introducing legislation that would require municipalities to contact residents if their flood plain status has changed based on information received from FEMA. The required communication would include a written notice that a change in classification has occurred and also the contact information for the National Flood Insurance Program, provides homeowners with important information to help them properly prepare for the possibility of a flood. As we have seen in areas across Pennsylvania, the risk of flooding is real, and not just in high risk areas. As state legislators, it is important that we keep our constituents informed about changes to flood hazard area maps, since map updates may affect flood insurance requirements for homeowners and other associated costs. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to help keep our constituents safe and allow them to take steps to further protect themselves and their largest single investment, their property. |
