Subject: | Gun Violence Survivors Week |
Every year, 36,000 Americans will lose their lives due to gun violence, over 73,000 will be shot and wounded, and scores more will be affected. This rate is indicative of the fact that the average American is 25 times more likely to die as a result of gun violence than citizens of other peer countries. These numbers constitute a public health epidemic. Survivors of gun violence often face a long and difficult journey to recovery. I plan to submit a resolution that would designate the first week of February as “Gun Violence Survivors Week,” to help spread awareness on the social costs associated with gun violence. February is the time of the year by which more Americans will die from gun violence than citizens of other peer countries in an entire year. By shedding light on gun violence survivors, it is my hope that this resolution will facilitate discussions among stakeholders to improve our public policies so that further gun violence is prevented. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution so that we may begin to make our communities safer. |
