| You can’t smell Radon. You also can’t see it or taste it, yet it may be a problem in your home or school. Radon comes from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found a large portion of Pennsylvania. While it is naturally occurring, it becomes a problem when this gas gets trapped in building structures. As such, you and your family are most likely to get your greatest exposure at home, where you spend most of your time. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year. Exposure to radon is an easily preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can usually take inexpensive steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family. January is National Radon Action Month, whereby the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings for radon. My legislation designates January 2020 as Radon Action Month in Pennsylvania, thereby encouraging all Pennsylvanians to test for radon pollution where they live, work, and go to school. |
