Subject: | Bill of Rights Day Resolution |
229 years ago on December 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights became effective as the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. One of the most important documents in U.S. history, the Bill of Rights enshrined certain liberties into the law of the land and reinforced the government’s duty not to violate these liberties. The Bill of Rights is just as much a cornerstone of U.S. democracy as it was 228 years ago and, as such, I feel it is important that we all take a moment to educate ourselves and our children on each of these rights so that we may play our own role in upholding them. That is why I am introducing a resolution designating December 15, 2020, as Bill of Rights Day in Pennsylvania. It is my hope that Pennsylvanians will take this opportunity to re-acquaint themselves with the freedoms guaranteed to the people by the U.S. Government, and that teachers will incorporate lessons regarding the Bill of Rights into the school day so that the next generation will grow up knowing what their rights are as Americans. Please join me in celebrating the birthday of a law that was, and remains, instrumental to American freedom. |
