| Subject: | Recognizing May 17, 2020, as “22q at the Zoo Worldwide Awareness Day” |
| 22q11.2 deletion is a chromosomal abnormality that can cause a wide range of health and developmental issues. It is the second most common genetic disorder and yet unfamiliarity and a lack of understanding about the syndrome means it is extremely under diagnosed. While there is no cure, early detection is crucial to improving an individual’s quality of life. It is my hope that fostering discussion of the condition will help increase awareness and facilitate earlier detection of the syndrome. It is for this reason that I will be introducing legislation recognizing May 17, 2020, as “22q at the Zoo Worldwide Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. First held in 2011 in Philadelphia, “22q at the Zoo Worldwide Awareness Day” is an annual event that is now celebrated around the world, including multiple locations throughout the Commonwealth for 2020. Volunteers, friends, and family gather at local zoos and parks to raise the public profile of this poorly recognized disorder. By handing out fact sheets, playing games, and showing solidarity to those affected by 22q11.2 disorders, participants help to engage the community with a worldwide movement dedicated to helping those who need it most. Please join me in promoting the public health of Pennsylvanians by raising the awareness of this misunderstood and under recognized condition. Your consideration is greatly appreciated. |
