| Resolution: Recognizing Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh for Design Pittsburgh Award In the fight against domestic violence, Pennsylvania should be proud that it has long been a leader in helping protect women and getting them back on their feet. In 1974, the Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh became one of the first six shelters for survivors of domestic violence in the U.S. It now services nearly 8,000 adults and children per year, including housing 500 individuals in emergency shelters. In addition to offering a safe place to stay, WC&S provides a variety of support services to women and families experiencing domestic violence. In an effort to better meet the needs of its clients, WC&S sought assistance from architecture firm Rothschild Doyno Collaborative to help them undergo a full renovation, which was in progress from summer 2016 to spring 2019. As a result of their collective hard work, the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Institute of Architects gave Rothschild Doyno Collaborative the Social Equity in Design Award in its 2019 Design Pittsburgh awards program. In recognition of this momentous achievement, I am introducing a resolution to congratulate WC&S and Rothschild Doyno Collaborative for this momentous achievement. The renovated center provides a safe, secure haven where trust-building and healing are at the forefront and ensures accessibility for a wide range of needs. I am sure it will enhance the ability of WC&S to help survivors of domestic violence for years to come. Please join me in congratulating the well deserved success of this partnership. |
