Subject: | COVID-19 Authorizing Relief Monies for Daily Operations |
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a unique and severe impact on volunteer firefighters. Aside from exposing themselves to a greater risk of COVID-19 as a result of their duties, they are personally struggling financially because many of them have lost their jobs and means of supporting their families. Under current law, fire relief associations may only use the Firemen’s Relief Fund monies for specific purposes such as equipment, training, insurance, death benefits, and hardships resulting from an injury or illness incurred in the line of duty. In order to assist these volunteer firefighters in their time of need, I am introducing a bill that would temporarily authorize the use of fire relief funds for the personal financial needs of volunteer firefighters. The funds could be used for, among other things, utility or grocery bills of these public servants. Please join me in supporting this important measure to assist those who protect us. |
