Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 11, 2020 01:05 PM
From: Representative Ryan E. Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: August 7, 2020 as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania

I will soon be introducing a Resolution commemorating August 7, 2020 as “Purple Heart Day” in Pennsylvania.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, an organization created in 1932 by an act of Congress for U.S. war veterans, strives to foster an environment of goodwill among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support legislative initiatives, and provide services to all veterans and their families. This organization, most importantly, ensures that we never forget the sacrifices of veterans killed in action and wounded in combat.

Across the United States, 27 states including Pennsylvania, have honored their combat wounded and killed military veterans by proclaiming their states to be Purple Heart states. During major wars from World War I to the present, 32,080 Pennsylvania veterans were killed in combat and more than 59,000 were wounded, making these Pennsylvanians eligible for the Purple Heart Medal.

Please join me in commemorating August 7, 2020 as Purple Heart Day in Pennsylvania to continue honoring the brave men and women who were wounded or killed while serving in our country’s military to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.
