Subject: | PTSI Awareness in June 2020 |
I will be introducing a resolution recognizing post-traumatic stress as an injury and naming June as “Post-Traumatic Stress Injury Awareness Month” and June 27th as “Post-Traumatic Stress Injury Awareness Day” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Re-labelling post-traumatic stress as an illness rather than a disorder, drops the negative connotations that come with the word 'disorder' and identifies these injuries as treatable in the same way as other service-related wounds. This will help to reduce the stigma around mental health injuries and encourage more service members, veterans, and others to seek and obtain needed care. The designation of a Post-Traumatic Stress Injury month and day in the state will help spread awareness about the symptoms as well as advance the discussion about diagnosis and treatment care for those suffering from the effects of trauma. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important and worthwhile resolution. |
