Subject: | COVID-19 Death Benefits for First Responders |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would amend the Emergency and Law Enforcement Personnel Death Benefits Act to include a presumption that the first responder contracted the disease during the course of their regular duties. Currently, if a first responder dies in the line of duty, their surviving family members are eligible for benefits under the Pennsylvania Emergency and Law Enforcement Personnel Death Benefits Act. Should the death be due to COVID-19, families are still eligible for this benefit, however they must prove they contracted the disease while performing their official duties. This is an undue burden to families already grieving the loss of a loved one. Furthermore, Federal death benefits already presume that the first responder contracted it while on duty. I hope you will join me by cosponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
