Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 30, 2020 03:19 PM
From: Representative Ryan E. Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: October 4-10, 2020 as National Midwifery Week in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a Resolution to recognize the week of October 4-10, 2020 as National Midwifery Week in Pennsylvania. Midwives provide vital childcare services in this Commonwealth by supporting the health of newborns and mothers during all stages of life.

Midwives have played an important role in our Commonwealth from its inception. First coming under state regulation in 1929, midwives have been consistently attending to a large number of births in Pennsylvania. As of 2018, there are 471 licensed practicing midwives in Pennsylvania, and 17,670 births in this Commonwealth during the year 2018 were attended to by licensed midwives.

National Midwifery week provides an opportunity for the entire Commonwealth to gather for education and celebration of the healthcare services provided by midwives. The duty of midwives extends far past childbirth and includes health check-ups, screenings, vaccinations, and pregnancy and postpartum care.

Please join me in recognizing October 4-10 as National Midwifery Week in Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this Resolution.
