Subject: | Healthcare Access for Individuals with Limited English Proficiency |
Imagine suffering a serious injury or illness and rushing to the hospital only to struggle to explain your situation to your doctor as well as to understand what treatment he or she recommends. For almost 26 million people in the United States with limited English proficiency, this situation is reality. In order to ensure that all people can receive the healthcare they need to survive, the federal government has adopted a number of regulations requiring that healthcare providers make translation services available to individuals who need it. Unfortunately, new federal regulations have been proposed which would undermine the provision of translation services in our healthcare system. For this reason, I will be introducing legislation to ensure that people with limited English proficiency receive the translation services that they need and deserve when accessing our healthcare system. Please join me in protecting the lives and wellbeing of all of our people regardless of what language they speak. |
