Subject: Charter School Reform – Application and Charter Process
 
Please join me in cosponsoring legislation I plan to introduce in the near future regarding improving the chartering process for charter schools, regional charter schools, and cyber charter schools (“charter school entities”).

This legislation will improve the chartering process through establishment of the following:
  • A standard application form to be developed by PDE for statewide use,
  • A charter amendment process,
  • Improving the student enrollment process and record transfer process, and
  • Allowing families with multiple children attending one cyber charter school to opt out of receiving multiple computers, printers and monitors.

The reforms embodied in my legislation are part of a legislative package of four bills critical to improving and strengthening our Charter School Law, which was groundbreaking upon its enactment in 1997 but has become outdated over time. We must make these reforms now in order to maintain charter, regional charter and cyber charter schools as a strong, quality school choice option for the Commonwealth’s children and families.
