Subject: | Expanding Organ Donation Registration to Hunting, Fishing, & Boating Licenses |
In the near future I will be introducing legislation to expand organ donation registration through the purchase of hunting, fishing, and boating licenses. According to the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE), there are 115,000 individuals on the national organ transplant waiting list and 20 individuals die each day waiting for an organ. To address this crisis, several states have passed laws to give their residents more opportunities to register as an organ donor beyond those available at the DMV. Just recently, the West Virginia Senate passed a bill out of committee that would require the Department of Natural Resources to include the election of organ donation on hunting licenses in West Virginia Additionally, this legislation will require the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Fish and Boat Commission to incorporate organ donation registration into their hunting, fishing, and boating license registration and renewal processes. Those who apply for these licenses would have the opportunity to sign up as an organ donor similar to how they would do so at the DMV. Individuals ages 16 through 18 would need parental consent in order to register. This legislation aims increase organ donation awareness by giving Pennsylvanians another opportunity to chose to to become an organ donor. A similar co-sponorship memo addressing this issue is circulating in the House of Representatives. I hope you will consider joining me in this important piece of legislation. |
