MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 23, 2019 12:19 PM
From: Senator Pam Iovino
To: All Senate members
Subject: Teal Talk Day Resolution

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating September 23, 2019, as “Teal Talk Day” in Pennsylvania.

This resolution intends to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, which is affecting thousands of women in our Commonwealth, and encourage dialogue. Over 1,000 women in Pennsylvania are diagnosed annually with ovarian cancer, with over 75% of these diagnoses at stage 3 or 4, advanced states of the disease’s progression. Ovarian cancer is tenacious -- according to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, about 70% of women who survive ovarian cancer will face a recurrence.

“Teal Talk Day” is an effort to raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer by opening lines of communication regarding family history and the high success rate (90%+) of controlling or curing the disease when it’s detected early. On Teal Talk Day, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to discuss the risks of ovarian cancer with loved ones and to see a gynecologist to discuss risk factors and monitoring practices. Men must be involved in these conversations too; they have mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, and friends at risk for ovarian cancer. In the hour it might take to have the “Teal Talk” during lunch, approximately 28 women worldwide will have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Please join me in supporting those who are suffering, raising awareness for those at risk, and encouraging a dialogue between family, friends, and physicians.

Wear teal on September 23, 2019, to show your support for those affected by ovarian cancer.

I hope you join me in support of this resolution.
