Subject: Recognizing the Hershey Company on its 125th Anniversary

Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution to celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Hershey Company, an industry-leading snacks company headquartered in Hershey, Pennsylvania, that is known for bringing goodness to the world through its iconic brands, remarkable people and enduring commitment to help children succeed.

When Milton S. Hershey founded The Hershey Company in 1894 (as Hershey Chocolate Company), he discovered the perfect recipe for combining cream with sweet chocolate. For the first time, a previously luxury product could be enjoyed by everyone. Hershey quickly became THE American symbol for quality milk chocolate.

As Hershey’s factory at 19 East Chocolate Avenue in Hershey grew to become the largest chocolate factory in the United States, Milton Hershey made sure that his company would also leave a legacy of goodness. In 1909, Milton and his wife Catherine established a school for orphaned boys. In 1918 Milton donated his entire fortune to a trust to ensure the school would live on, which it does as the Milton Hershey School, a cost-free, co-residential school and home for children from lower income families.

Milton Hershey also aimed to build a community to bring people together. Despite declining sales during the Great Depression, Milton launched the Great Building Campaign. This initiative created 600 jobs, and built a zoo, hotel, theatre, sports arena, rose garden and stadium—cultural landmarks that remain in Hershey today.

Today, The Hershey Company has approximately 16,500 employees around the world who work every day to deliver delicious, quality products. The company has more than 80 brands around the world that drive more than $7.8 billion in annual revenues, including such iconic brand names as Hershey’s, Reese’s, Kit Kat, Jolly Rancher, Ice Breakers, and SkinnyPop.

I hope you will join me in recognizing The Hershey Company on their commitment to Pennsylvania workers, consumers and the greater community as we celebrate their 125th anniversary.
