Subject: | Legislation to Prohibit the Declawing of Cats |
I will soon introduce legislation to prohibit the declawing of cats, unless medically necessary or required for the animal to work in a therapeutic setting. New York recently became the first state to prohibit the declawing of cats. The declawing of cats is often rooted in convenience and there are a number of possible complications with declawing surgery, such as damage to the radial nerve, hemorrhages, bone chips that prevent healing, painful regrowth of deformed claws inside of the paw, and chronic back and joint pain as shoulder, leg and back muscles weaken. This issue was brought to my attention by a group of student activists in my district and I hope you will join me in sponsoring this bill. |
