Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 18, 2020 01:40 PM
From: Senator Steven J. Santarsiero
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing April 2020 as “World HIE Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen from various causes and primarily affects infants, newborns and young children. When the brain is deprived of oxygen, brain cells are injured. Some may recover, some may die.

HIE can happen in a variety of ways prior to birth, during or after the birth process and during childhood. Treatment options are limited, and outcomes are wide-ranging.
  • 75-80% survive;
  • 50-70% experience seizures; and
  • 30-40% form a developmental disability, such as:
    • Cerebral palsy, epilepsy, vision loss, hearing loss, feeding issues, cognitive delays or speech delays.
With these young lives and their families in mind, it is imperative that we take the time to foster greater awareness and education among medical professionals, legislators and the public about this dangerous condition. Therefore, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 2020, as “World HIE Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Organizations like Hope for HIE provide essential advocacy to foster hope for families affected by HIE and provide families with resources and information. The goal of World HIE Awareness Month is to educate and connect families affected by HIE. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
