Subject: | Recognizing April 2020 as “World HIE Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania |
Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen from various causes and primarily affects infants, newborns and young children. When the brain is deprived of oxygen, brain cells are injured. Some may recover, some may die. HIE can happen in a variety of ways prior to birth, during or after the birth process and during childhood. Treatment options are limited, and outcomes are wide-ranging.
Organizations like Hope for HIE provide essential advocacy to foster hope for families affected by HIE and provide families with resources and information. The goal of World HIE Awareness Month is to educate and connect families affected by HIE. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
