Subject: | Jazz Appreciation Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution to designate April 2020 as “Jazz Appreciation Month” in Pennsylvania. Jazz Appreciation Month, or JAM, was created in 2002 at the Smithsonian Museum to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. This year, JAM celebrates the dynamic impact of the often-overlooked contributions that women have made to jazz, both on and off the stage. Despite the continued struggle women face to be recognized as equal contributors to the field of jazz, women have made their mark as performers, conductors, educators, and producers and directors of jazz festivals. The 2020 featured artist is Toshiko Akiyoshi, whose contributions to the art of big band jazz earned her the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master award in 2007. Please join me in recognizing the contributions of women to the field of jazz by designating April as “Jazz Appreciation Month” in Pennsylvania. |
