Subject: | Permanently Establishing the Office of Health Equity |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that would further provide for the Office of Health Equity in Pennsylvania. While this office exists through executive order currently, my bill would establish it permanently through statute. The pandemic has highlighted the overwhelming consequences of health disparities on Pennsylvanians. Too many of our residents continue to face barriers to health services and are living in conditions that pose a threat to their wellbeing. The Office of Health Equity, if enacted statutorily, would heighten the state’s capacity to reduce and eliminate such disparities by ensuring the continued dedication of resources and operations toward this objective. Presently, the office serves to examine and inform the state on opportunities for Pennsylvanians to live their healthiest lives. Through data analysis, collaboration and advocacy, it aims to identify gaps and address disparities in health care and related services for individuals of all races, religions, ethnicities, abilities, genders and sexual orientations. As the overall health of the state pivots upon support for and advancement of equal access, preserving and amplifying the Office of Health Equity is critical to the future of the Commonwealth. I urge you to join me in supporting the establishment of the Office of Health Equity in statute. Not only will your action provide an added tool to the Commonwealth’s arsenal against COVID-19, but also, it will improve the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians. |
