Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 1, 2020 02:02 PM
From: Representative Malcolm Kenyatta and Rep. Melissa L. Shusterman
To: All House members
Subject: Urging Congress to Help the Self-Employed, Independent Contractors, and “Gig” Economy Workers During the COVID-19 Crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many American workers into unemployment with no clear end in sight. Independent contractors and those working in the “gig” economy face some of the toughest hurdles as they are not eligible for same unemployment protections and benefits as other workers. Self-employed workers, independent contractors, gig economy workers, temporary and part-time workers make up about a third of the country’s workforce.

In order to help these workers, we will be introducing a resolution urging Congress to add unemployment benefits and protections for independent contractors and others who normally don’t qualify for benefits in any new COVID-19 legislative aid package. We should not let employment classification prevent us from helping our fellow workers during these unprecedented times.

I ask that you support this resolution and join us in working to ensure all Pennsylvania workers and their families get the help they need during this crisis.
