Subject: Warning Labels on Prescription Opioid Containers

We must continue to find and utilize innovative solutions that will focus on harm reduction and the incidence of substance use disorder. That is why I will be introducing legislation that will require the State Board of Pharmacy to issue regulations requiring warning labels be added to opioid prescription bottles.

The addition of warning labels will ensure patients and their families across the Commonwealth are well-informed of the risks associated with opioid prescriptions every time they are used. In the United States, warning labels are already required on products, such as cigarettes and alcoholic beverages in order to inform the public about the health hazards that may result from their consumption or abuse. These labels have been shown to be an effective, low-cost method for communicating the product’s associated health risks. Warning labels on opioid prescriptions would serve as a consistent reminder of the potential dangers of abusing prescription medication.

Please join me in supporting this commonsense legislation.
