Subject: | Holding Health Care Providers to High Standards |
We turn to Pennsylvania’s hospitals and nursing homes at some of the happiest and most desperate times in our lives. We trust them to help us as we welcome new babies, as a loved one goes through cancer treatment, or to take care of a beloved family member who needs the care of a nursing home. While our state contains many of the finest health care facilities in the world, sometimes things still manage to go very wrong. It is even more troubling when the hospital or nursing home had notice from an inspection or survey that the tragedy that struck was preventable, had they taken the correct steps to prevent it. That is why I am introducing legislation allowing the Department of Health’s inspections to be used when someone files a civil action against a hospital or nursing home where the patient’s care is alleged to be substandard, in order to show a pattern of conduct. Please join me to help protect the health of Pennsylvanians during their most vulnerable moments. |
