Subject: | Speed Timing Device Calibration (Former HB1825) |
Law enforcement officers rely heavily upon their equipment to uphold the laws of the Commonwealth. In particular, officers must use their speed timing devices on a daily basis to effectively enforce speed limits on our roadways. However, there is inconsistency in the frequency with which their equipment must be calibrated to ensure it is functioning properly. Under current law, radar and speedometers are required to be on a calibration cycle of one year. Electronic timing devices, although having been proven to withstand longer calibration cycles, are subject to a calibration cycle of 60 days. This inconsistency consumes law enforcements valuable time. In addition to synchronizing the calibration requirements, this legislation will provide for electronic certification of the calibration testing. It is time to bring the certification of the calibration testing up to speed with the times. These updates to the Vehicle Code are common sense and will assist law enforcement officers' efforts to make our roadways safer. I hope you consider co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
