Subject: | Making Our Streets Safer for Pedestrians (formerly HB2130) |
Not stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk isn’t merely inconsiderate – it can be lethal. Over 38% of pedestrian fatalities occurred when the pedestrian was entering an intersection, mid-block crossing, or driveway entrance. As the number of pedestrian-related accidents rise, we need to look at ways to make our streets safer. I am introducing legislation requiring vehicles on both sides of a roadway to yield the right-of-way and stop for pedestrians lawfully within an intersection or adjacent crosswalk. Vehicles must remain stopped as the pedestrian is crossing the street. If enacted, a violation would result in a $50 fine or a $200 if the violation occurs in a school zone. Requiring vehicles to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk may not seem pressing, but it can be a matter of life or death. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
