Subject: | Read Across America Day |
Every day, people of all ages across the world are inspired to think deeply and use their imaginations by the books they read. For children in particular, a positive link is clear: good reading skills in children lead to academic and professional success as adults. At the same time, reading books with a diverse set of characters and settings gives children an opportunity to learn about people and places far away from where they live and teaches them to be more empathetic to those who might look or act differently from what they are used to. For this reason, I am introducing a resolution to recognize March 2, 2021, as “Read Across America Day” in Pennsylvania. Now a year-round program, Read Across America was started by the National Education Association as a way to make reading exciting for children of all ages and from all backgrounds. Observed annually on beloved author Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Read Across America Day—our nation’s largest reading event—is celebrated by millions of students, teachers, parents, and others every year. Please join me in supporting a lifetime of reading, imagination, and learning for Pennsylvanians of all ages. Your consideration and co-sponsorship are appreciated. |
