Subject: | Homeschool Hybrid Educational Access Act |
In Pennsylvania, students in home education programs are entitled to participate in extracurricular activities offered by the school districts in which they live. I plan to introduce legislation amending the law to permit students in home education programs to participate in academic classes as well. Families of students who participate in home education programs pay taxes and are valued members of the communities in which they live, and permitting them to supplement their home education courses with classes offered by their public school would enable families to maximize the educational potential for students. Under existing laws, school districts would even be entitled to Department of Education funding for the part of the school day that homeschoolers participate in their courses. In addition, some schools forbid homeschool students from participating in co-curricular activities such as marching band, which contain a combination of academic and extracurricular components. This legislation would permit homeschooling students to participate in co-curricular programs and vocational-technical schools as well. Please join me in ensuring students and school districts will thrive by allowing homeschooling students to access academic classes. Your consideration and co-sponsorship are appreciated. |
