Subject: | Prohibiting Distracted Driving for School Bus Drivers |
For Pennsylvanian students, safe transportation to and from school is just as important as safety within school grounds. Distracted driving has the potential to affect us all and, for distracted bus drivers, to threaten the safety of our students. For this reason, I plan to introduce legislation that prohibits school bus drivers from consuming food or beverages and from using cellular phones while operating a school bus that is transporting children. Based on a recommendation from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, the legislation includes a provision that allows drivers with a relevant medical condition to consume food or beverage if parked in a safe area off of a roadway. In an era where it is easy to become distracted while driving, we must ensure that our students are safe. Please join me in cosponsoring this commonsense legislation to safeguard our students. |
