Subject: | Resolution - 250th Anniversary of the United States Navy and Marine Corps |
The year 2025 will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. Because much of the history of the Navy and Marine Corps is based in Pennsylvania, it is fitting and proper that the Commonwealth should be the host site of the 250th birthday celebrations. Notably, the original legislative action out of which the Continental Navy grew was adopted in Philadelphia when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to procure two armed vessels on October 13, 1775, in anticipation of the conflict with the British Empire. The United States Marine Corps also traces its founding to the City of Brotherly Love. The Continental Marines were established by the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775 to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War and conduct ship-to-ship fighting. The Marine recruiting headquarters was in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines. This concurrent resolution beseeches the Secretary of the Navy to designate Philadelphia and portions of the Delaware River as the site of the main celebration of the 250th birthdays of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Please join me in supporting this concurrent resolution properly recognizing the Keystone State as the rightful heir to the legacy of these two extraordinary branches of the United States military that, for two and a half centuries, have brought peace and freedom to the world. |
