| Subject: | Food Allergy Awareness: Max’s Law |
| For people living with food allergies, like my constituent, Max, dining out can be complicated and difficult. As an elementary school student with severe allergies, Max is extremely limited in where he can enjoy time with his friends and family. In an effort to ensure his safety and the safety of so many Pennsylvanians with allergies, we need to ensure our restaurants are safe. Allergic reactions can vary from minor irritation to anaphylaxis and loss of consciousness, but restaurants are currently under no obligation to disclose whether they use ingredients that could trigger an allergic reaction nor are they required to have any kind of training on what to do should a reaction take place. This gap in knowledge leaves both the diner and the restaurant and its staff in a precarious position. In order to address this issue, I will be introducing legislation that would require restaurants to have at least one food protection manager certified in allergen awareness on staff during operational hours. This measure would also require restaurants to provide training to their staff on food allergies and procedures for accommodating patrons who have food allergies. In addition, the legislation would require restaurants to post on their menus a request for customers to inform their servers of any food allergies they have before placing an order.
