Subject: | Microtransit Grant Program |
Too often, underserved communities are separated from public transit, with the nearest bus stop or subway station being too distant to access reliably. However, a rise in small-scale transit/rideshare with flexible routes and on-demand scheduling has made traditional transit more accessible for those who previously lived too far for regular use. In addition, these programs are a boon for individuals with mobility challenges. This small-scale public transit, also known as microtransit, has the potential to serve Pennsylvanians across our Commonwealth. For this reason, I am introducing legislation that would create a grant program under DCED to assist local transit authorities with providing microtransit to their riders. DCED would work with the transit authorities and provide them with grants that would assist in creating and maintaining microtransit systems. In doing so, we can ensure that Pennsylvanians have greater access to important public transit, regardless of where they live. Providing our transit authorities with greater ability to operate microtransit will create more sustainable and accessible pathways across the Commonwealth. I hope you join with me and co-sponsor this legislation. |
