Subject: Ending Unnecessary Traffic Stops -- Repealing the prohibition of hanging objects from rearview mirrors

Following the tragic and senseless death of Daunte Wright, we were shocked to learn that Pennsylvania is one of six states that still penalizes drivers for hanging objects from their rearview mirrors.

The law itself is vague and does not specify what penalty, if any, should be given to a driver of a vehicle with something hanging from their mirror. People can be stopped for simply hanging their facemask to make sure it’s at the ready. Police officers can use something as simple as a hanging air freshener to pull over a driver who is otherwise fully obeying the law.

In 2021, it is high time for us to reconsider just how necessary this arbitrary and unclear restriction is. Please join us in co-sponsoring legislation to repeal the ban on hanging air fresheners from our rearview mirrors. Pennsylvanians are responsible enough on their own to decide what does and does not obstruct their view of the road.
