Subject: | Hunger Action Month |
With the average cost of a meal in Pennsylvania being $3.17, many people face the difficult choice of paying a bill or feeding themselves and their families. In Pennsylvania alone, about 1.3 million people do not know where their next meal is coming from. Out of that number almost 383,000 are children. As a direct result of COVID-19, Feeding America estimates the number of Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity will grow to 15.4 percent in 2020 – an increase of 45.2 percent in just two years. To focus the attention on the persistent problem of domestic hunger in the United States and Pennsylvania, I plan on introducing a non-controversial resolution recognizing September 2021 as “Hunger Action Month.” Pennsylvanians Preschool and school-age children who experience severe hunger are known to have higher levels of chronic illness, depression, and behavioral problems than children receiving a well-balanced diet. Food insecure senior citizens have lower nutrient intakes which places one at risk of disability. I believe it takes a village to ensure the future of the next generation. Every citizen, business and government entity have a role to play in getting food, and resources to those underserved and in need. Let us take a step together by joining me in co-sponsoring this resolution. Thank you. |
