MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 16, 2021 09:03 AM
From: Representative Martina A. White and Rep. Jared G. Solomon
To: All House members
Subject: Healthy School Buildings

In the coming days, we plan to introduce legislation to establish the Healthy School Buildings Grant Program.

This program will allow for schools with facilities in disrepair, presenting health hazards to faculty and students, to apply for grant funding in order to make necessary repairs to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for students. Each school entity will be required to match any grant award with federal dollars received from the American Rescue Plan (ARP ESSER) or other federal dollars available to the school entity.

Among the most prevalent lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic is the reminder of just how important in-person instruction is for our students across the Commonwealth. After over 18 months of disruption and inconsistency, our students cannot afford to miss any more valuable instruction time due to unsafe facilities, nor attempt to learn in an unhealthy and unsafe environment due to dangerous levels of mold, lead, asbestos and other toxins.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this legislation to assure our students have the opportunity to learn in a safe, healthy, and toxin-free environment.
