Subject: | High-impact Tutoring to Address COVID-19 Learning Loss |
The public health measures instituted in schools across the nation as a result of COVID-19 will impact a whole generation of students by affecting learning outcomes for years to come. As daily school life has continuously changed to protect the health of students, staff, and the community, many students experienced significant missed classroom time. This lost time has likely resulted in learning loss, in which students lose some of the academic gains they had made prior to the pandemic, putting them behind relative to pre-pandemic learning outcomes. It is important that Pennsylvanian students are kept on track academically so that, when they graduate, they are prepared for their pursuits after high school and their education is competitive with students in other states. To that end, I am introducing legislation to create a grant program to help schools implement high-impact tutoring programs. High-impact tutoring is a cost-efficient way to improve student academic success by providing students with small group tutoring in addition to their normal class time. Other states such as Arkansas, Colorado, and Tennessee have passed similar legislation to bring their students back to where they were academically prior to the pandemic. Pennsylvania needs to join those efforts so that our students are not left behind. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation to help our children get back some of what they lost from the pandemic. |
