Subject: | Expanding Access to Abortion |
With abortion banned in Ohio, Kentucky, and other close states, Pennsylvania has seen a significant influx of out-of-state patients. While our providers are offering care with open arms, the increase in new patients is putting significant pressure on our network. Existing limitations on care – including outdated scope of practice laws that limit who can provide abortion services – increase the strain. Abortion care is incredibly safe. Studies related to the provision of medication abortion found it is administered without complications 99.6% of the time. Pennsylvania needs more practitioners who can safely administer medication abortion. For this reason, I am introducing legislation that would allow physician assistants, nurse-midwives, and certified registered nurse practitioners to prescribe medication abortion. Currently, 18 states and the District of Columbia allow advanced practitioners to prescribe this medication because of both the safety of the medication and the ability and training of these practitioners. Please join me by cosponsoring this legislation to expand our pool of providers and therefore increase access to care. |
