Subject: | Improving Safety and Mobility by Allowing Cyclists to Yield at Stop Signs |
Last year 20 cyclists were killed on Pennsylvania roadways, the highest number ever recorded by PennDOT. That is why we are introducing legislation to legalize “safety stops” for cyclists on Pennsylvania’s roadways to promote safety and bring our laws more in line with the behavior of cyclists. In the past five years, eight states, including neighboring Delaware, have adopted similar legislation which allows people riding bikes to treat stop signs as if they were yield signs. Studies have shown that in states which have adopted safety stop laws, cyclist injuries have decreased by 14.5% on average. This bill protects the safety of some of the most vulnerable people on our roadways and does so in a way that conforms to the reality of how people behave on the road. Please join us in promoting safety and convenience for cyclists in the Commonwealth. |
