Subject: | Tracking and Reporting of Drug Overdose Related Deaths |
I plan to introduce legislation to establish a regular reporting on deaths related to drug use in Pennsylvania. This bill would require the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) to coordinate, collect, compile and release the data on all deaths related to drug use. The information would be provided to DDAP from the Department of Health, county coroners, medical examiners and hospital and health systems. We need to be able to utilize the information from our coroners, medical examiners and our hospitals who can provide more details on the reporting of the cause of death which relates to or has a correlation with drug use; overdoses, vehicle accidents, homicides, etc. I authored a similar measure that required the mandatory reporting of infants born with symptoms of withdraw related to drug addiction. I wanted to provide lawmakers, county and local leaders and state agencies up to date information on the frequency and trends of drug related deaths. We need as much data and information from all reliable sources on drug related deaths. We need a uniform reporting criteria so that there is no confusion about the number of drug related deaths in the Commonwealth. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation. |
