Subject: | A resolution designating April 2021 as "Jazz Appreciation Month" |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution to designate April 2021 as “Jazz Appreciation Month” in Pennsylvania. Jazz Appreciation Month, or JAM, was created in 2002 at the Smithsonian Museum to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. This year JAM continues its efforts to recognize and celebrate the dynamic impact of the often-overlooked contributions that women have made to jazz. Despite the struggle women face to be recognized as equal contributors to the field of jazz, women have established themselves as performers, conductors, educators, and producers and directors of jazz festivals. The 2021 featured artist is Nina Simone, whose contributions to the art of jazz are unmistakable and whose musical legacy reverberates through the social commentary and civil rights activism of today. Often referred to as “the High Priestess of Soul” and “the civil rights diva,” Simone’s ability to weave a classical repertoire with folk, blues and jazz while simultaneously elevating the issues of race and gender undoubtedly cement her iconic status in the history of jazz. Please join me in recognizing this year’s featured artist Nina Simone by designating April as “Jazz Appreciation Month” in Pennsylvania. |
