Subject: | Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month - May 2021 |
In the coming weeks, I will introduce a resolution recognizing May 2021 as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. With spring in the air and warmer months quickly approaching, many Pennsylvanians are eager to be back on their motorcycles. It is an important time to remind motorcyclists to keep safety in mind and to increase awareness among other vehicle drivers to be extra vigilant and alert. Motorcycle riding is a popular form of recreation and transportation for licensed motorcyclists across the Commonwealth. Over the past decade, the number of motorcyclists has remained fairly steady with 810,858 operators registered last year. These motorcyclists, however, face unique dangers on the road with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reporting there were over 3,000 motorcycle accidents in 2019 and approximately 170 fatalities. In an effort to confront this, the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education of Pennsylvania (A.B.A.T.E.) is continuing its safety advocacy by encouraging motorcycle operators to participate in appropriate training. This benefits not just motorcyclists themselves, but also other drivers and pedestrians. That is worthy of special recognition and why I am sponsoring a resolution. Please join me by cosponsoring this resolution to acknowledge such an important issue of public safety. |
