Subject: | Enhancing the Direct Shipment of Wine |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to allow Pennsylvania consumers and licensees to purchase and receive shipments directly from Pennsylvania licensed wine brokers. Today, both consumers and licensees are forced to route their online wine purchases through the state-owned liquor stores. This creates an unnecessary fourth tier, which only increases costs while decreasing product selection and availability. The closure of the state liquor stores during the pandemic showed us that an alternative is needed for consumers. In addition, the increasing closures and reduced hours of stores in Pennsylvania’s rural counties has greatly limited accessibility to products of choice for those that don’t live in highly populated areas. My legislation will apply the same taxation to online purchases that wine products are subject to currently, ensuring that the state will still receive substantial tax revenue. Further, existing regulations on wine brokers will ensure consumer protections are in place. Please join me in co-sponsoring this piece of consumer- and business-driven legislation. |
