Subject: | Prioritizing Cold Case Investigations |
New technology is being used to reexamine cold cases, and there are encouraging results. The problem now is that investigations are forced to rely on hit-or-miss funding from crowdsourcing or grants. Over the years, I have met with several families who share sorrow over not knowing the fate of loved ones and frustration over investigatory units putting missing persons on the bottom of their priority list. My view is that we owe these individuals and other families across the commonwealth a fresh chance at realizing certainty as to the fate of their loved ones. For this to happen, we must provide the structure, the imperative, and the funding at the state level. I am introducing legislation to support the efforts of the criminal investigation units of the Pennsylvania State Police, which partner with local law enforcement on cold case investigations, to prioritize these open cases and take advantage of all the tools available to help solve these crimes. As a reliable source of funding, I am requesting a line item for this purpose to be included in the state budget being negotiated for the coming fiscal year. I hope you will join me in supporting this important measure. |
