Subject: | Alcohol Awareness Month |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution designating April 2022, as “Alcohol Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Most adults in the United States who drink alcohol do so moderately and without complications. At the same time, alcohol-related problems are among the most significant public health issues in the country. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects about 15 million adults in the United States, and an estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third most preventable cause of death in the nation. Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America kicked off a month-long campaign last week with its Alcohol-Free Weekend to raise public awareness about the use of alcohol and how it may be affecting individuals, families, businesses, and communities. This year, the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s theme to raise awareness is, "For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction,” which highlights the fact that alcohol remains the number one drug of choice for America’s youth and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined. Additionally, according to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 414,000 adolescents ages 12 to 17 had Alcohol Use Disorder. Please join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution to raise awareness and encourage prevention to Alcohol Use Disorder. |
